I speak English to my friends back home and others in my program. Russian to the many Russians here. French to everyone else. It's getting a little bit crowded in my brain, but that's all right.
And now, I'm expected to read a math book in Portuguese. Not just stare at it. I'm supposed to know exactly what's going on, because then, my professor intends me to adapt this proof the book has.
I don't speak Portuguese. I "learned" Spanish in high school, and every time I try to speak it, it either comes out in a French accent, or in just plain French. And math is unsettling enough in a language, like French, that I do know, but that's not quite native. "Oh, well, if you know Spanish, then Portuguese is easy!" says my professor.
Life is complicated.
