Perseid Meteor Shower

I went with a bunch of people to see the Perseid meteor shower. We climbed to the student observatory just off campus. You go up an unlit road by the golf course until you reach a gate. The gate is only for cars. Going around it, up the hill, you get to a place of tallish dried out grass. People lie on their backs and look at stars.

One of the people I was with, A--, is from south India. He said that when looking at meteor showers, the correct thing to do is to compose haikus. I didn't quite get if this spontaneous poetry business was a south Indian thing, or just his thing. But in any case, we tried it out.

I'll put my haiku in the next post, because I'm slightly proud of it. But then also a bit embarrassed, seeing as how doing math is not doing poetry, as poetic as math may be, so I can't just shout "I am a poet!" and quickly run off, leaving behind just my haiku.
