Could they be cuter than cats?

The other day, I was walking home down a wide road at dusk, when I see three furry shapes scampering across. Coming closer, I see that they're raccoons- two playful ones in the lead, and a doubtful, cautious one bringing up the rear. They went into a field, and I followed them. The two in front were oblivious to me. They went to explore a crack in a fence leading to an undergrad dorm. But the one in back was suspicious. As I followed, trying to approach, he kept on pretending to eat something in the grass, then look up when I least expected it. Each time he looked up, I would freeze, but just a bit too late.

After a while, he made it to the hole in the wooden fence. (Here let me make a side note to say that raccoons are surprisingly easy to flatten . . . just like cats.) "Come on, guys!" he says to the others, "come back here! We shouldn't be in there". Reluctantly, his friends come back into my field. They chase each other, and frollick and play, and eat whatever raccoons eat in the grass. But that one raccoon, he's still suspicious.

Finally, he just couldn't take it any more. He turns, faces me, and runs right at me, trying to run me down! Honestly, I was doubtful that he would be violent. But when he was about ten feet away, I thought I wouldn't risk it, and backed off into a neighboring field.

When he saw he won, he went back towards the others, and rolled around in the grass in victory. It was very very cute.

So now the plan is to go raccoon hunting again one of these nights. And this time, if the raccoon starts running at me, I won't go away. I'll try to play with him. It will be amazing.
