August in the Baltics

So, we're about to run off to rainy rainy Tallinn, after an absolutely beautiful sun-filled week of 6 cities in about as many days. On the schedule today: sweater-and-mitten bazar under the old wall, and wool shop.

While I have a little time left, some highlights:

Vilnius = small. It is beautiful, and very subdued. Full of churches. Lots of amber.

Riga- big and busy. It has a sun museum, full of sun wall hangings, watches, mirrors, from all over the world. They let you paint a sun. Mine is awesome. And I got to feel like I was in third grade!

Lots of amber, and some knit woolen things.

Tallinn- medieval old town, full of stone arches and passageways. A bit less amber, lots of woolen things.

The cities go from north to south. When, in the late 80's, they wanted independence from the USSR, they formed a human chain of millions of people from one city to the next.

And then we had some day trips, but I've gotta run. So, more later.
