Snails and Money

A snail crossed my path today! It was was a real French snail, just like the kind I had for dinner last night. And I thought to myself, that's why they eat them, they're everywhere! The poor little guy had one of its horns missing, presumably from a previous capture attempt. And its neck was stuck waay out, trying to go just a little bit faster. I stopped and watched it for a while.

Speaking of snails leads me right to the NSF, or the National Science Foundation. I applied for their grad grant, along with tons and tons of others. Normally, they get their results out in early April. And so they did, except for 1000 or so of us poor souls who they failed to notify. We 1000 are waiting to see whether we get an honorable mention, or the money. Which, granted, doesn't sound so bad. Except that it's been a month already, no a month and a half. And we've been waiting and waiting for something finally to be decided. Like waiting for Godot. Or, to be more sciency, Schroedinger's decision.

It's not so bad for me, but there are some people whose ability to be a grad student is decided by this. They just don't have any other funds sources. And for me, I would just really like something official! Anyway. The really agonizing part is that as of today, they have the final decisions. They had them yesterday, even, I think. What's holding them up? Bureaucracy and signatures.

I think I'll go back to my pretty and delicious French snails, please!
